| Social Skills, Parent & Sibling Support Groups
LBSS hosts a variety of skill building and support workshops for the entire family. Currently, groups are active in the tri-cities and Vancouver regions. Special sessions can be organized during holidays and will be offered depending on community needs. Each session runs for eight weeks, on evenings or weekends, throughout the year.
If you are interested in learning more about the Groups or registration, please contact the Laurel Behaviour Support Services Coordinator.
Social Skills Group, ages 6-18 years. - A trained consultant facilitates each small group session based on well-established social skills curriculum. The programs are tailored to the unique characteristics and needs of each group. This program offers a positive learning experience in a natural social setting. Each participant sets goals and practices new skills amongst peers while having fun. A Social Skills Group is an ideal setting for building self-confidence, independence and communication skills while meeting new friends.
Parent Support Group - for children enrolled in Social Skills group above.
A consultant will facilitate a series of facilitated discussions for the information and benefit of parents. This group provides an opportunity to share information and ask questions related to raising children on the autism spectrum or with other developmental disabilities. Parents and guardians meet privately while their children are participating in the Social Skills Group.
Siblings Group, ages 6-12 or 13-18 years. - These groups provide additional support and advice for children or youth aged 6-18 coping with the challenges of living with a special needs child. Our consultants facilitate safe and fun recreational opportunities for siblings, while providing opportunities for sharing and discussion. Parents frequently report improvements in how the siblings interact following the session.
In addition, posAbilities offers the services of a Family Services and Communications Coordinator, who is able to provide information and assistance with accessing programs and services for supported individuals. This work also includes building family support networks and engaging families in social policy |
